The short answer

For most visitors, the best time to visit Murdeshwar is roughly October to February, when the monsoon has passed, the weather is more comfortable and Netrani dive trips are usually running. The temple is worth visiting all year, though, and the monsoon has its own wet, green appeal if you aren't planning to go into the sea.

Oct–NovPost-monsoon: green landscapes, the sea settling, the dive season usually starting
Dec–FebPeak season: pleasant weather, clear sunsets, busiest on holidays
Mar–MayHot and humid; diving usually continues; quieter on weekdays
Jun–SepMonsoon: heavy rain, sea entry normally banned, no diving, Jog Falls at its fullest

Seasons are approximate and shift a little every year. For specific dates, check the forecast, or ask us on WhatsApp.

October to November: after the rains

As the monsoon fades, the coast is at its greenest and the heat isn't yet strong. The sea gradually calms, and Netrani dive trips usually resume around October or November, depending on conditions. Early in this window, an occasional late shower is still possible.

Good for: temple visits, Honnavar boating with green riverbanks, Jog Falls with a strong flow still running, and first dives of the season (check before you book).

December to February: peak season

This is the most comfortable time for most travellers: warm days, cooler evenings and generally clear skies, which make for the best sunsets over the sea. It's also the busiest time, especially around Christmas and New Year, school holidays and long weekends.

Good for: everything, from the beach and the temple to Netrani dives and day trips. Book rooms early for holiday dates; our rooms start from ₹699.

March to May: hot and humid

Temperatures and humidity rise from March, and middays get tiring. Mornings and evenings are still pleasant, and dive trips usually continue until around May, depending on the weather. School holidays bring family crowds in April and May.

Good for: early-morning temple visits, diving, and evening beach walks. Plan to rest indoors in the afternoon.

Crowds through the year

Murdeshwar is a pilgrimage town, so it's busy on weekends almost all year, and very busy on public holidays, school vacations and festival days. Day-trippers often arrive in the late morning, which makes the temple most crowded from late morning to early afternoon.

  • Quietest: weekdays outside holiday periods, and early mornings any day.
  • Busiest: long weekends, Christmas and New Year, April–May school holidays, Maha Shivaratri and the rathotsava.
  • Monsoon weekdays: often the calmest time of all, if you don't mind the rain.

If you're visiting on a busy date, book your room early. Our rooms start from ₹699.

June to September: the monsoon

The southwest monsoon brings heavy, frequent rain to the Karnataka coast. The sea turns rough and the authorities normally ban entering the water, with warning boards and patrols on the beach. Netrani dive trips and beach water sports are normally suspended.

Still, the monsoon has its fans: the landscape turns lush, crowds thin out, and the waves crashing below the temple hill are a sight in themselves. It's also the best time to see Jog Falls at full force (see our nearby trips guide). Pack rain gear, allow extra time on the roads and keep plans flexible.

Festivals and busy dates

Maha Shivaratri (February or March)

The biggest festival at Murdeshwar's Shiva temple. Its date follows the lunar calendar: in 2026 it fell on 15 February. Expect special poojas, an all-night vigil and devotees walking in from nearby towns. Rooms and roads fill up, so book well ahead if you want to be there, or avoid those days if you'd rather have a quiet visit.

Rathotsava (around January)

The temple's annual chariot festival is usually held in January, after Makara Sankranti. Dates vary each year, so check locally.

Long weekends and holidays

Public holidays, school vacations and the Christmas–New Year period bring big crowds of day-trippers and families. Weekdays are noticeably calmer.

Weather tips for any month

  • Coastal humidity makes it feel hotter than the thermometer says. Drink water often and rest in the afternoon.
  • Sea conditions can change quickly. A calm-looking beach can still have strong currents, so always follow warnings.
  • For dive trips, check with us a few days before. Sailings are decided based on the weather and sea on the day.
  • During the monsoon, check road conditions before long drives, especially to Jog Falls in the Ghats.

Best time by type of trip

Scuba divingRoughly Nov–Apr for the most settled conditions within the usual Oct/Nov–May season
Temple and pilgrimageAll year; Maha Shivaratri for the festival atmosphere (and crowds)
Beach and sunsetsNov–Feb for the clearest skies
Jog Falls tripRoughly Jul–Oct, during and just after the monsoon
Budget and quietWeekdays outside holidays; the monsoon if you don't need the sea

If you can only choose one month

If you want a bit of everything (comfortable weather, the temple, sunsets and a good chance of diving), aim for roughly November to February, on weekdays. If your heart is set on seeing Jog Falls in full flow, come during or just after the monsoon instead, and plan the temple and Honnavar for the same trip. Whatever you choose, message us your dates and we'll tell you honestly what to expect.

Best time of day, any season

  • Early morning for the temple, before the heat and the queues.
  • Midday for rest, a long lunch, or the drive to your next stop.
  • Late afternoon to sunset for the beach and the gopura view.
  • After dark to see the statue lit up.

What to pack by season

  • Oct–Feb: light cottons, sunscreen, a light layer for breezy evenings.
  • Mar–May: breathable clothes, a hat, plenty of water, electrolytes.
  • Jun–Sep: an umbrella or raincoat, quick-dry clothes, sandals with grip, plastic bags for electronics.
  • All year: modest clothes for the temple dress code.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Booking a Netrani dive for July or August: trips are normally suspended in the monsoon.
  • Turning up on Maha Shivaratri without a room.
  • Planning long midday walks in April and May.
  • Assuming the beach is safe for swimming just because the rain has stopped for a day.
