Overview

Murdeshwar sits in the middle of one of Karnataka's most varied stretches of coast. Within a couple of hours you can glide through mangroves on a river, stand at the edge of one of India's highest waterfalls, or visit some of the region's best-known temples. All distances below are approximate road distances from Murdeshwar.

Honnavar: the Sharavathi backwaters

At Honnavar the Sharavathi river widens into a broad estuary before meeting the Arabian Sea. Its backwaters are lined with mangroves and dotted with small river islands, and a boat ride here is one of the calmest, greenest experiences on this coast. Expect still water, coconut palms, fishing canoes and birds along the banks.

What a boat ride is like

Boats follow the main river and then slip into narrower channels where the mangroves close in. The pace is slow, and the boatmen often point out birds and the mangrove roots. Rides vary in length and route, so ask what's included before you set off.

The mangrove boardwalk

Near Honnavar, a Forest Department mangrove boardwalk, about 1.5 km long, lets you walk among the mangroves on a raised wooden path. It's a good addition to a boat ride. Check whether it's open on the day.

Tips

  • Go in the morning or late afternoon for softer light and cooler air.
  • Wear a hat and sunscreen; there's little shade on the water.
  • Bring binoculars if you like birdwatching.
  • Boating in the monsoon depends on river conditions. Ask us before you plan it.

We arrange Honnavar boating from Murdeshwar, including the taxi. Ask on WhatsApp for options and the current price.

Why the mangroves matter

Mangroves are salt-tolerant trees that grow where rivers meet the sea. Their tangled roots shelter young fish and crabs, hold the riverbanks together and help protect the coast from erosion. The Honnavar area has some of the better-known mangrove patches on the Karnataka coast, which is why boat rides and the boardwalk here focus on them. Enjoy them quietly: don't throw anything into the water and avoid breaking branches or roots.

Idagunji Ganesha temple

On the way between Murdeshwar and Honnavar, a short detour leads to Idagunji, about 19 km from Murdeshwar by road. Its Ganesha temple is one of the most visited in the region. The deity here is shown standing, unusual for Ganesha, and the temple is especially crowded around Vinayaka Chaturthi. It pairs naturally with a Honnavar boat ride.

A sample half-day: Idagunji and Honnavar

  • Early morning: leave Murdeshwar by taxi or scooter.
  • Morning: visit the Idagunji Ganesha temple before the crowds.
  • Late morning: continue to Honnavar for a boat ride on the backwaters, then walk the mangrove boardwalk if it's open.
  • Lunch: eat in Honnavar or head back to Murdeshwar for a late lunch.

Prefer the afternoon? Reverse it: boating in the late-afternoon light, then Idagunji, and back to Murdeshwar by evening.

Jog Falls

Jog Falls is one of India's highest waterfalls. The Sharavathi river plunges about 253 m (830 ft) into a gorge in four streams, known as Raja, Rani, Roarer and Rocket. It lies about 95 km from Murdeshwar (about 68 km from Honnavar), up in the Western Ghats, so the trip takes a full day.

  • When to go: the falls are usually at their fullest during and just after the monsoon, roughly July to October. In the dry months the flow can be much thinner.
  • Mist: in heavy rain, mist can hide the falls for a while. Be patient, or go early.
  • Roads: ghat roads are slow and winding; a taxi is more comfortable than a scooter for most people.
  • Safety: stay behind railings and on marked paths; rocks near the edge are slippery.

Kollur Mookambika temple

About 60 km from Murdeshwar, Kollur sits at the foot of the Western Ghats and is home to the Mookambika temple, a major pilgrimage centre that draws visitors from across South India. Many travellers combine it with Murdeshwar on a temple circuit. Expect a dress code and queues on festival days.

Gokarna

About 77 km north via Kumta, Gokarna is known for the Mahabaleshwar temple, which is linked to the same Atmalinga legend as Murdeshwar, and for its beaches, including Om, Kudle and Gokarna beach. Stop at Honnavar on the way to make a full day of it. See our Gokarna to Murdeshwar guide.

A quick extra: Apsarakonda

Near Honnavar, Apsarakonda has a small waterfall and a viewpoint over the coast. It's an easy add-on to a Honnavar day if you have an hour to spare. Ask locally whether it's accessible in the monsoon.

Combining trips

Half dayIdagunji + Honnavar boating
Full day (north)Idagunji + Honnavar + Apsarakonda, or Honnavar + Gokarna
Full day (Ghats)Jog Falls (with a Honnavar stop on the way back if time allows)
Full day (south-east)Kollur Mookambika

Don't try to fit Jog Falls, Kollur and Gokarna into one day; they lie in different directions.

What to pack for a day trip

  • Water, snacks and sunscreen; a hat for the boat
  • Modest clothes for temples, and sandals that slip off easily
  • A raincoat or umbrella in the monsoon, and shoes with grip for Jog Falls
  • Cash in small notes for entry fees, offerings and snacks
  • A power bank; long days drain phone batteries

Getting there

  • Taxi: the most comfortable choice, especially for Jog and Kollur. We arrange taxis from Murdeshwar.
  • Scooter: fine for Idagunji and Honnavar in daylight. See our bike rental guide.
  • Bus: NH66 buses connect Murdeshwar, Honnavar and Kumta; inland routes take longer.

Costs checklist

We don't publish fixed prices for taxis, boating or day trips, because they depend on the route, the car and the group size. Budget for:

Mistakes to avoid

  • Visiting Jog in the peak dry season and expecting a full waterfall.
  • Starting a Ghats trip late in the day.
  • Forgetting sun protection on the boat.
  • Arriving at temples without suitable clothes.
