At a glance
Gokarna and Murdeshwar sit on the same stretch of the Uttara Kannada coast. Murdeshwar is south of Gokarna, about 77 km by road on NH66 via Kumta and Honnavar, and the drive usually takes around 1.5 to 2 hours without long stops.
| Option | What to expect |
|---|---|
| Taxi / car | About 77 km on NH66, roughly 1.5–2 hours, door to door. Ask us on WhatsApp for a fare. |
| Bus | Buses run along NH66; a direct one isn't always available, and changing at Kumta is common. |
| Train | Gokarna Road station to Murdeshwar station on the Konkan Railway. Check current timings before you go. |
| Bike / scooter | Possible for confident riders; it's a busy highway, so ride in daylight. |
Which option suits you?
- Taxi: best for families, groups with luggage, early-morning dive days, and anyone who wants to stop at Honnavar on the way. Also the simplest choice from the Om Beach or Kudle Beach side of Gokarna, where public transport is thin.
- Bus: best for solo travellers and backpackers on a budget with flexible time.
- Train: pleasant if a convenient train happens to stop at both stations on your day. Remember Gokarna Road station is outside the town, so you'll need an auto or taxi to reach it.
- Two-wheeler: only for experienced riders who are comfortable with highway traffic.
Before you leave Gokarna
Many travellers come to Murdeshwar after a few days on Gokarna's beaches. If you have a morning to spare, Gokarna town is worth a look before you go. The Mahabaleshwar temple there is tied to the same Atmalinga legend told at Murdeshwar, so the two places pair naturally.

If you're staying near Om Beach or Kudle Beach, allow extra time to reach the highway, and agree a pickup point with your driver in advance.
By road: the NH66 coastal drive
From Gokarna you drive back out to the national highway and head south. The road runs through Kumta and then Honnavar, where it crosses the wide Sharavathi river near its mouth, before reaching Murdeshwar. The Shiva statue and the temple tower are visible from the highway as you get close.
Traffic is usually manageable, but trucks and buses use the same road, so allow extra time on weekends, festival days and in heavy rain.

Good places to break the journey
- Kumta: a handy stop for tea and snacks.
- Honnavar: the Sharavathi backwaters and the mangrove boardwalk are near the highway. With extra time, add a boat ride (see our Honnavar boating guide).
- Idagunji: the well-known Ganesha temple is a short detour off the highway between Honnavar and Murdeshwar.
Taxi with Murdeshwar Service
We arrange taxis between Gokarna and Murdeshwar in both directions. We don't publish a fixed fare, because it depends on the car type, the date, your exact pickup point (Gokarna town, Om Beach or Kudle Beach area, or Gokarna Road station) and any stops you want on the way.
Send us on WhatsApp: your date, pickup time and place, number of people and amount of luggage, and any stops you'd like (Honnavar boating, Idagunji). We'll confirm the fare before the trip.
See our taxi and car rental page for more about our cars.
By bus
State and private buses run along NH66 between Kumta, Honnavar, Bhatkal and beyond. From Gokarna, a direct bus to Murdeshwar isn't always available, so many travellers take a bus to Kumta and change there for a bus heading south towards Bhatkal.
Long-distance buses usually stop on the highway at the Murdeshwar junction rather than near the temple, so you'll need a short auto ride to the beach and temple area. Bus times change, so ask at the bus stand on the day.
- Keep small change handy for tickets and autos.
- Tell the conductor you're getting off at Murdeshwar so you don't miss the junction.
- Big backpacks can be awkward on crowded local buses. Travel light if you can.
By train
Both places are on the Konkan Railway. Trains for Gokarna stop at Gokarna Road station, which is outside the town, and Murdeshwar station is a short auto ride from the temple and beach.

Not every train stops at both stations, and timings change, so check the current schedule on the official Indian Railways or IRCTC websites before planning around a train. If your train arrives early or late, we can arrange a pickup from Murdeshwar station.

By bike or scooter
Riding down the coast is possible, but NH66 carries heavy traffic. If you ride, do it in daylight, wear a helmet (rider and pillion), keep left, and take breaks at Kumta or Honnavar. Once you're in Murdeshwar, a rented scooter is the easiest way around town; see our bike and scooter rental guide.
Going the other way: Murdeshwar to Gokarna
Everything in this guide works in reverse. Many travellers start in Murdeshwar (for example after a Netrani dive) and then head north to Gokarna's beaches. A taxi from Murdeshwar lets you visit Idagunji and Honnavar on the way and still reach Gokarna in time for the sunset. By bus, head to Kumta and change for Gokarna. By train, remember you'll arrive at Gokarna Road station, outside the town. We arrange taxis in both directions, so just tell us your plan on WhatsApp.
Best time of day to travel
- Morning departure: cooler, lighter traffic, and time for a Honnavar stop. Arriving by early afternoon means you can see the temple and the sunset the same day.
- Avoid riding or driving after dark if you can. Highway lighting is patchy and heavy vehicles move fast.
- Monsoon (roughly June to September): heavy rain can slow the road and reduce visibility. Leave extra time and check conditions before setting out.
Costs checklist
We only quote fixed prices for our rooms (from ₹699) and Netrani scuba (from ₹3,499 per person). For the journey, budget for:
- Your taxi fare (ask us), or bus tickets plus an auto from the highway junction, or a train ticket plus autos at both ends
- Snacks and water for the road
- Any boat ride or entry fees if you stop at Honnavar
Tips for families and groups
- A taxi is far easier than buses with children, elderly travellers or lots of luggage.
- Book the room and the taxi together on WhatsApp so the pickup and check-in times line up.
- Pack snacks and water. Roadside stops are available, but not at every turn.
- If anyone gets carsick, ask for a front seat and plan a break halfway at Honnavar.
Mistakes to avoid
- Assuming Gokarna Road station is in Gokarna town. It isn't; plan the transfer.
- Trusting old train or bus timings from blogs. Check official sources on the day.
- Getting off the bus in the wrong place. The Murdeshwar highway junction is not at the beach.
- Driving down on the morning of a Netrani dive. Arrive the evening before.
Luggage and comfort tips
- Coastal heat and humidity make the trip tiring; carry water and use the car's AC breaks wisely.
- Pack a small day bag with water, sunscreen and temple-appropriate clothes, so you don't need to open your main bag at every stop.
- If you're carrying dive gear or surfboards, mention it when booking a taxi so we send a suitable car.
- Keep your phone charged. Network coverage is generally fine on NH66, but a power bank helps on long days.
Sample travel day
Morning: check out in Gokarna and set off by taxi. Late morning: stop at Honnavar for a backwater boat ride or a walk on the mangrove boardwalk. Afternoon: short detour to Idagunji, then on to Murdeshwar to check in. Evening: temple visit and sunset on the beach.
Planning a Netrani dive? Arrive the day before
Netrani dive boats leave Murdeshwar in the morning, and reporting is early. Driving down from Gokarna on the morning of the dive is risky: a late start or a slow highway can make you miss the boat. The easy fix is to reach Murdeshwar the evening before.
Our rooms start from ₹699, and you can book the room, the taxi and the Netrani dive together in one WhatsApp chat.
