Why rent a two-wheeler?

Murdeshwar is small, but its main points are spread out: the temple and beach on the headland, the railway station a short ride away, the highway junction where buses stop, and day-trip spots up and down the coast. A rented scooter or motorbike lets you move between them on your own schedule, without waiting for autos.

Scooter or motorbike?

  • Scooters (gearless) are the easiest choice for town, the beach and short trips. They're simple to ride and have storage under the seat.
  • Motorbikes (geared) suit experienced riders planning longer rides on the highway.

Which models are available changes with the season and demand. Tell us what you're comfortable riding, and we'll tell you what we have.

Documents usually needed

  • A valid driving licence that covers the vehicle type (gearless or geared). Many rental services also ask to see the original.
  • A photo ID, such as an Aadhaar card, passport or voter ID.
  • Foreign visitors usually need their passport and an International Driving Permit along with their home licence.
  • A security deposit may be required. Ask us how it works and when it's returned.

Requirements can vary. Confirm on WhatsApp before you arrive so there's no surprise at pickup.

Deposits and payment

Rental services in tourist towns commonly ask for a refundable security deposit, and some may keep a copy of your ID for the rental period. Before paying, ask clearly:

  • How much the deposit is and when it's returned
  • What the rate covers (helmet or helmets, daily kilometres, if any)
  • What happens in case of a breakdown, puncture or minor damage
  • What happens if you return late

Get the answers on WhatsApp so you have them in writing. We're happy to explain our own terms before you book.

Helmets and road rules

  • Helmets are required for both rider and pillion in Karnataka. Wear them buckled, even for short rides.
  • Keep left, use indicators, and don't carry more than one passenger.
  • Don't ride after drinking, and don't use your phone while riding.
  • Carry the vehicle papers you're given and your licence while riding.

At pickup: a 2-minute check

  • Walk around the vehicle and photograph any existing scratches or dents, with the date visible.
  • Check the brakes, horn, lights, indicators and tyre pressure.
  • Note the fuel level and how it should be on return.
  • Save our number in your phone in case of a breakdown.
  • Agree the return time, place and what happens if you're running late.

Fuel

Rentals are usually handed over with some fuel, and you top up as you go. Ask at pickup how much is in the tank and what level to return it with. There are fuel stations on NH66; fill up before longer rides rather than counting on finding one in quieter areas.

If something goes wrong

  • Puncture or breakdown: pull over safely, call the rental service first and tell them where you are. Don't attempt big repairs yourself.
  • Minor accident: make sure everyone is safe, move off the road if possible, take photos and inform the rental service straight away.
  • Lost key: tell the rental service before calling anyone else.
  • Emergency: in India, 112 is the national emergency number.

Easy routes from Murdeshwar

Town loop

Temple and statue, the beach, the market area and the railway station. A relaxed hour or two, with plenty of stops.

Idagunji, about 19 km

Ride north on NH66 and take the turn-off to the Idagunji Ganesha temple. An easy half-day with a temple visit.

Honnavar, about 25–30 km

Continue north to Honnavar for the Sharavathi backwaters and the mangrove boardwalk. Combine it with Idagunji for a full day. See the Honnavar guide.

Longer trips

Gokarna (about 77 km), Kollur (about 60 km) and Jog Falls (about 95 km, with ghat roads) are long rides. Unless you're an experienced rider, a taxi is the safer and more comfortable choice for these.

Riding on NH66

  • Trucks and buses move fast; stay left and give them room.
  • Avoid highway riding after dark. Lighting is patchy and animals sometimes wander onto the road.
  • Watch for speed breakers near villages and junctions.
  • In the monsoon, roads get slippery and visibility drops; slow down, or skip long rides.

Parking and security

Park in designated areas near the temple and beach, lock the steering, and don't leave helmets or bags on the vehicle. On busy festival days, parking near the temple fills up quickly; leave the scooter a little further away and walk in.

Riding in the monsoon

From roughly June to September, heavy rain makes roads slippery and reduces visibility. If you rent a two-wheeler in the monsoon, ride slowly, brake gently, avoid puddles that might hide potholes, and carry a raincoat and a plastic bag for your phone and documents. For anything beyond town and nearby trips, a taxi is the more sensible choice in heavy rain.

Price

We don't publish a fixed bike or scooter rental rate, because it depends on the vehicle, the season and how long you need it. Ask on WhatsApp with your dates and preferred vehicle, and we'll confirm the price and deposit before you come. Book through our bike rental page.

When a taxi is the better choice

A scooter isn't for everyone. If you've never ridden before, are travelling with small children or elderly family members, have heavy luggage, or are planning long ghat drives, a taxi is safer and more comfortable. Many visitors combine both: a scooter for town and the beach, and a taxi for one longer day trip.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Skipping the photo check at pickup.
  • Riding without a helmet "just to the beach".
  • Planning Jog Falls on a scooter as a beginner.
  • Running low on fuel on quieter roads.
  • Arriving without the original licence.
