Overview

Murdeshwar is a small temple town on a headland in Uttara Kannada, with the sea on three sides of the temple hill. It's compact enough to see the main sights in a day, and it makes a good base for diving and for day trips along the coast and into the Western Ghats.

1. The Shiva statue on Kanduka Hill

The giant seated statue of Lord Shiva is the image most people know Murdeshwar by. It stands about 123 feet (37 m) high on Kanduka Hill, facing the sea, and you can see it from the beach and the highway. Walk around the hill for the sculptures and the views. Early morning and the hour before sunset are the most comfortable (and most photogenic) times, and the statue is lit up after dark.

For the story behind the statue and the temple, read our Murdeshwar temple and Shiva statue guide.

2. Murdeshwar Temple and the Raja Gopura

The temple at the foot of the statue is dedicated to Shiva, and its entrance tower, the Raja Gopura, rises about 20 storeys. A lift inside the tower takes visitors up for a view over the statue, the coastline and the town (a small fee may apply).

  • The temple has a dress code for entry: traditional or modest clothing, with no shorts or sleeveless tops. Carry something suitable if you're coming from the beach.
  • Leave footwear at the counter before entering.
  • Queues get long on weekends and festival days; mornings are usually quieter.
  • Temple and lift timings can change, so check locally on the day.

3. Murdeshwar beach

The beach curves away from the temple hill and is the easiest place to spend an evening, with snack stalls, sea views and the lit-up statue after dark. The sea can be strong, so swim only where it's permitted, follow any lifeguard or police instructions and stay out of the water in rough weather. During the monsoon, entering the sea is normally banned.

4. Scuba diving at Netrani Island

Murdeshwar is the starting point for dive trips to Netrani Island, a reef out at sea. Beginners can do an instructor-led try-dive, usually without needing to swim. The season usually runs from around October or November to May. With us, scuba starts from ₹3,499 per person. Read the full Netrani scuba guide.

5. Honnavar boating on the Sharavathi

About 25–30 km north of Murdeshwar, the Sharavathi river meets the sea at Honnavar. Boat rides here go through quiet backwaters lined with mangroves, past small river islands, with birds along the banks. The Forest Department's mangrove boardwalk nearby makes a good short walk. We arrange Honnavar boating; message us for options and the current price.

6. Idagunji Ganesha temple

A short trip from Murdeshwar (about 19 km by road), the Idagunji temple is one of the region's best-known Ganesha shrines, and many pilgrims combine it with Murdeshwar and Gokarna. It's an easy half-day outing, or a stop on the way to or from Honnavar.

7. Day trips from Murdeshwar

Jog Falls, about 95 km inland

One of India's highest waterfalls, on the Sharavathi river. The falls are usually at their fullest during and just after the monsoon. The drive climbs into the Ghats, so plan a full day.

Distances are approximate road distances. Tell us which places you want to cover and we'll suggest a sensible order and arrange the car. Our Honnavar and nearby trips guide has more detail.

8. Try the coastal food

Murdeshwar sits on the Karavali coast, and the food reflects it. Simple vegetarian "meals" served on a plate or banana leaf are easy to find near the temple, and many places also serve South Indian breakfasts such as idli, dosa and buns. Away from the temple area, coastal restaurants cook fish in the local style, with fried fish and fish curry with rice being popular choices.

Coconut features everywhere, and fresh tender coconut water is the best drink on a hot afternoon. Ask locally which places are good that season. If you're staying with us, we're happy to point you in the right direction.

9. An early walk around the headland

One of the simplest pleasures in Murdeshwar costs nothing: getting up early and walking along the beach and around the foot of Kanduka Hill before the town wakes up. The light is soft, the fishing boats are coming in, and you'll have the statue almost to yourself for photos. Bring water, wear sandals you can get sandy, and stay off the rocks if waves are breaking.

Best time of day for each

Jog FallsStart early; it's a long day out and mist can roll in later

If you only have one day

  • Early morning: temple darshan and a walk around the statue before the crowds.
  • Mid-morning: ride the Raja Gopura lift for the view.
  • Midday: lunch and a rest out of the heat.
  • Afternoon: a short trip to Idagunji or the Honnavar backwaters.
  • Sunset: back to the beach, then see the statue lit up.

With two days, add Netrani or a full Honnavar day. See our 2-day itinerary.

Tips for families and couples

  • Families: the statue terrace and the beach are easy wins for children. Keep them close near the water and on the hill. Plan indoor rest in the hottest hours.
  • Elderly visitors: the temple area involves some walking and slopes; go early and take it slowly.
  • Couples: sunset on the beach and an evening walk to see the lit statue are the classic Murdeshwar moments. A Honnavar boat ride makes a calm second day.

On a rainy day

In the monsoon, or on the odd wet day in other seasons, the sea is off-limits, but Murdeshwar still has plenty to offer. The temple, the cave gallery below the statue and the view from the gopura (when the lift is running) can all be done between showers. Watching the waves crash below the temple hill is a spectacle in itself. Jog Falls is at its fullest in the rainy months, though ghat roads need care. Carry an umbrella, wear sandals with good grip, and keep valuables in plastic bags.

Getting around: rent a bike or scooter

For short hops between your room, the temple, the beach, the railway station and the highway junction, a rented bike or scooter is the most flexible option. You'll usually need your driving licence and an ID for the paperwork. Wear a helmet, and avoid riding on the highway after dark. See our bike and scooter rental guide or the bike rental page. For longer day trips, a taxi is more comfortable.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Arriving at the temple in beachwear: you may not be allowed in.
  • Swimming in rough sea or anywhere warnings are posted.
  • Trying to squeeze Jog Falls, Kollur and Gokarna into one day: pick one.
  • Planning Netrani during the monsoon, when trips are normally suspended.

Costs checklist

  • Room: ours start from ₹699
  • Netrani scuba: from ₹3,499 per person
  • Gopura lift and any museum fees: small amounts; check locally
  • Scooter rental, taxi day trips and Honnavar boating: ask us on WhatsApp for current prices
