Overview
Two days is the sweet spot for Murdeshwar. You get an unhurried day for the temple, the statue and the beach, and a second day for something bigger: a Netrani Island scuba dive in season, or a slow Honnavar backwater day all year round.
| Day 1 | Temple, Shiva statue, Raja Gopura, beach sunset, statue lit at night |
|---|---|
| Day 2 (A) | Netrani scuba from ₹3,499 per person (usually Oct/Nov–May) |
| Day 2 (B) | Honnavar boating, mangrove boardwalk, Idagunji temple |
| Stay | In Murdeshwar; our rooms start from ₹699 |
| Getting around | Scooter for town; taxi for Honnavar and arrivals |
Before you go
- Pick your day-2 option based on the season: Netrani trips are normally suspended in the monsoon.
- Book the dive early if you want Netrani, especially for weekends.
- Arrive the evening before day 1, or early on day 1, so that dive morning isn't rushed.
- Pack temple-appropriate clothes for the dress code.
The easiest way: message us on WhatsApp once, and we can sort out the room, dive or boating, and the taxi or scooter together.
Day 1: temple, statue and beach
Morning: the temple and statue
Start early at the Murdeshwar temple, before the heat and queues. Dress for the dress code, leave your footwear at the counter, and then walk up around the Shiva statue on Kanduka Hill for views of the sea on both sides.

Late morning: Raja Gopura
Take the lift up the 20-storey Raja Gopura for the view over the statue and the coastline (small fee; check timings locally). Then explore the sculptures and the cave gallery below the statue.
Afternoon: lunch and rest
Have a long lunch and a rest in your room through the hottest hours. If you're diving tomorrow, this is a good time to confirm your reporting time.
Evening: beach and sunset
Head to the beach as the sun drops over the Arabian Sea. Stay on the sand after dark to see the statue lit up, then have an early dinner, especially if you're diving in the morning.

Day 2, option A: Netrani scuba
In season (usually around October or November to May), a Netrani dive is the highlight of a Murdeshwar trip. Report early in the morning for the briefing, take the roughly one-hour boat ride to the island, and do an instructor-led try-dive around the reef. No experience is needed, and swimming usually isn't either.

You're usually back by the afternoon. Have a late lunch, rest, and take a gentle beach walk in the evening. With us, Netrani scuba starts from ₹3,499 per person. Read the full Netrani guide before you go.
Day 2, option B: Honnavar and Idagunji
For a slower day, or when diving isn't running, head north. Stop at the Idagunji Ganesha temple (about 19 km by road), then carry on to Honnavar (about 25–30 km from Murdeshwar) for a boat ride on the Sharavathi backwaters among mangroves and small river islands. Add a walk on the Forest Department's mangrove boardwalk if it's open.

Go in the morning, or in the late afternoon for softer light. Be back in Murdeshwar by evening. We can arrange the taxi and the boating together; ask for the current price. Details in our Honnavar guide.
Monsoon version of the plan
Visiting between roughly June and September? Keep day 1 as it is, but enjoy the beach from the sand rather than the water; entering the sea is normally banned. On day 2, skip Netrani (trips are normally suspended) and choose either Idagunji and Honnavar, if river conditions allow boating, or a full-day trip to Jog Falls, which is at its fullest in the rains. Leave extra time on the roads and pack rain gear.
Arrival-day options
- Arriving by an evening train or bus: check in, have dinner, and see the statue lit up. Start day 1 fresh in the morning.
- Arriving in the morning: drop your bags, freshen up and go straight into day 1, but book your dive (if any) for day 2, not the same day.
- Coming from Gokarna: stop at Honnavar on the way and you've already done part of option B. See Gokarna to Murdeshwar.
Got a third day?
- Jog Falls (about 95 km): a full day into the Ghats, best during and just after the monsoon.
- Kollur (about 60 km): the Mookambika temple, a popular pilgrimage trip.
- Gokarna (about 77 km): temples and beaches. See Gokarna to Murdeshwar.
Where to stay
Stay in Murdeshwar itself so the temple, beach and dive meeting point are all close. Our rooms start from ₹699. Message us your dates on WhatsApp for availability. Book early for weekends, holidays and Maha Shivaratri.
Getting there and around
- Train: Murdeshwar station is on the Konkan Railway, a short auto ride from the temple. Check current timings on official railway websites.
- Bus: buses on NH66 stop at the Murdeshwar junction on the highway.
- Air: the nearest major airport is Mangaluru, a few hours' drive south.
- In town: a rented scooter is the easiest option; a taxi suits families and day trips.
Keep the pace relaxed
The coast is hot and humid for much of the year, and both days start early. Build in a proper rest after lunch, drink plenty of water and don't over-schedule the evenings. The best moments in Murdeshwar (the sunset on the beach, the statue lit at night, the quiet on the backwaters) don't need a tight timetable.
Costs checklist
- Room: from ₹699 (ours)
- Netrani scuba: from ₹3,499 per person (option A)
- Honnavar boating and taxi: ask on WhatsApp (option B)
- Gopura lift and small entry fees: check locally
- Food, water and autos
- Scooter rental: ask on WhatsApp
What to pack
- Modest clothes for the temple; light cottons for the rest of the day
- Swimwear, a towel and a change of clothes for dive day
- Sunscreen, sunglasses, a hat and a refillable water bottle
- A photo ID and your driving licence if you'll rent a scooter
- A raincoat or umbrella in the monsoon
Tips for families and couples
- Families: option B (Honnavar) is gentler for young children and older travellers. Check age rules before promising anyone a dive.
- Couples: the day 1 sunset plus a Netrani dive together is a classic combination. Ask to be on the same boat.
- Groups: split the day if needed: divers to Netrani, everyone else to Honnavar, and meet up for the sunset.
Mistakes to avoid
- Arriving by overnight bus and going straight to a dive.
- Scheduling the temple during its afternoon break.
- Planning Netrani in the monsoon.
- Packing only beachwear.
Frequently asked questions
Is 2 days enough for Murdeshwar?
Yes. Two days covers the temple, statue, gopura and beach, plus either a Netrani dive (in season) or a Honnavar boating day.
Should I do Netrani or Honnavar on day 2?
Choose Netrani for an adventure, usually between October/November and May. Choose Honnavar for a calmer day, or when diving isn't running.
Where should I stay for a Murdeshwar trip?
Stay in Murdeshwar so the temple, beach and dive meeting point are close. Our rooms start from ₹699.
How do I reach Murdeshwar?
By Konkan Railway to Murdeshwar station, by bus on NH66 to the Murdeshwar junction, or by road from Mangaluru airport, a few hours' drive away.
How much does a 2-day Murdeshwar trip cost?
It depends on your choices. Our rooms start from ₹699 and Netrani scuba from ₹3,499 per person; ask on WhatsApp for taxis, scooters and Honnavar boating.
Can I visit Murdeshwar in 2 days during the monsoon?
Yes. Do the temple and beach views on day 1 and Honnavar or Jog Falls on day 2, but stay out of the sea; diving is normally suspended.
Can I do Netrani and Honnavar on the same day?
It's not recommended. Netrani takes most of the day with an early start. Do them on separate days, or pick one for day 2.
